Fairmont golfers place 2nd, 3rd at events | News, Sports, Jobs


BYRON — Two days after winning their regular-season invitational, the Fairmont Cardinals golf golfers withstood the 35 mph wind gusts to capture third place at the 12-team Byron Invite at Somerby Golf Club.

Solveig Senf and Maggy Totzke each produced top-10 individual showings to guide Fairmont to a score of 388 — 22 strokes off tournament champion Lake City’s winning pace and only one shot back of runner-up Shakopee.

Senf generated a co-team-best three pars to pace her 18-hole round of 45-46-91 to garner fourth place overall — eight shots off of Lake City golfer Emma Berge’s gold-medal mark of 83. Totzke finished in a three-way tie for sixth place individually by firing a 47-48-95, including two pars on the round.

Anika Haugen and Brynn Gustafson completed the Cardinals’ counting scores by carding back-to-back 49s en route to a 98 and a 51-53-104, respectively. Haugen also sank a co-team-best three pars en route to sharing 13th place overall, while Gustafson made Fairmont’s only birdie by carding a 4 on the par-5 first hole en route to tying for 24th place individually.

Bailey Martinson contributed a 56-50-106 to the Cardinals’ effort, while Lauren Davis sank one par to net a 55-53-108.

The Fairmont girls team tees off the Redwood Valley Invite at 2 p.m. Thursday in Redwood Falls.

BSC Division Event

St. Peter and Fairmont slugged it out to the final hole as the Saints squeezed out a 174-175 win over the Cardinals during a Big South Conference East Divisional Event on Monday at Waseca Lakeside Club.

Fairmont’s Jacob Harris and St. Peter’s Anthony Nicolai matched each other shot-for-shot to share nine-hole medalist honors with a pair of 40s. Harris birdied the second hole before adding four pars.

Ashton Lloyd carded a 42 to pace Blue Earth Area’s third-place team total of 182. Lloyd connected for birdie on No. 5 to go with three pars.

Alexander Moeller and Brock Lutterman each netted top-10 scores for the Cardinals, while Blake Hilgendorf completed the counting marks with a piece of the three-way tie at 11th place. Moeller tied for fourth with a 43, including two pars, while Lutterman shared sixth place by penciling in a 45 with three pars. Hilgendorf shot a 47, including one par.

Hartley Aust tied for 20th place with a 49 for the Cardinals, while Mathew Cone shared 27th place overall at 51. Aust made one par.

Kyren Sunken netted a 45 to tie for sixth place overall, Eli Blagg nailed down a share of 11th at 47, while Jackson Blondin chipped in a 48 to complete BEA’s counting totals.

Nathan Murphy (53) and Gordy Bruellman (58) completed the Bucs’ effort on the nine-hole round.

The Fairmont boys play in the Redwood Valley Invite on Thursday, while Blue Earth Area hosts Jackson County Central at 4:30 p.m. today at Minn-Iowa Golf Course in Elmore.

Top of Iowa Conference Meet

Chase Cummins earned a share of third place overall to steer the North Union Warriors to a runner-up team showing to champion Lake Mills during Monday’s Top of Iowa Conference boys golf tournament.

Cummins netted an 18-hole round of 42-44-86 to pace North Union’s second-place score of 354, while Garrett Ham earned medalist honors by carding an 80 to pace Lake Mills’ winning score of 334.

Nick Schiltz finished in a three-way tie for eighth-place overall by shooting a 43-45-88 for the Warriors, while teammates Teagon Fothergill and Danyal Fothergill completed the counting marks with a pair of 90s. Teagon Fothergill netted back-to-back 45s, while Danyal Fothergill contributed a 47-43.

Carter Martens shared 32nd overall by delivering a 103 for the Warriors, while Parker Eichenberger supplied a 104.

North Union competes in the Iowa District Meets starting on Thursday at a site and time to be determined.
