Olmsted 200: Celebrating the designer of Druid Hills

Dellwood Park is one of the Olmsted Linear Parks along Ponce de Leon Avenue in Druid Hills.

Frederick Law Olmsted, considered the father of landscape architecture, built some of America’s most preeminent greenspaces: Central Park in New York Metropolis, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, the Emerald Necklace in Boston, the grounds of the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, and the grounds of the United States Capitol in Washington D.C.

In 1892, though ending the Biltmore Estate, Olmsted was invited to Atlanta by developer Joel Hurt (who also conceived Inman Park) to style his most current planned group, Druid Hills. The centerpiece of the community would be a series of linear parks along Ponce de Leon Avenue. It would be Olmsted’s final commission before his loss of life in 1903.

As with all his models, Olmsted’s key goal, no matter what and the place he was functioning, was to try to adjust American culture for the far better. He used his landscape layouts to encourage harmony, wellbeing and social democracy and thought that parks and greenspace have been a spot for all people to appear jointly, build neighborhood and link on prevalent floor.
