SALEM — There were state champions headlining the 28th F.E. Cope Invitational, but once again Salem ran away with the team titles.

The Salem boys won for the fifth straight time and the Salem girls made it three in a row on a blustery Friday at Sebo Stadium.

The Salem boys won four events, including three in the field events, on the way to 136 points. Wadsworth was second with 107 and Canfield took third with 85 1/2.

The Salem girls won the last four races to pull away from Wadsworth, 132-114 1/3. Beaver Local was third with 67 1/3.

Individually, Beaver Local won six events, three by senior Kodi Kinsey, and Crestview senior Shelby Rambo won twice.

Winning for the Salem boys were Salem senior Carson Stockman in the discus (144-5), senior Cam Jaquette in the long jump (20-4), junior Dillon Monroy in the high jump (6-0) and Austin Sinkovich, Caleb Shafer, Davin Koskinen and Jaquette in the 1600-meter relay (3:42.61).

The Salem girls had a strong finish by winning the last four races — freshman Maggie Hopple in the 800 run (2:31.10), sophomore Rylee Hutton in the 200 dash (27.05 seconds), freshman Claire Jaquette in the 3200 run (12:45.70) and Ella Double, Maggie Hall, Hutton and Hopple in the 1600 relay (4:18.90). The Quakers also were second in the other three relays.

The 1600-meter run was one of the top races with Maplewood sophomore Cayleigh Richards beating Hall and Hopple for the top spot. Richards is a two-time state cross country champion and the defending Division III 3200 state champion.

Kinsey, who finished third in the Division II long jump at state last year, was first in the long jump (16-3), 100 hurdles (16.34) and 300 hurdles (49.93). Senior Brooke Talbot also won the high jump (4-8) for the Beavers.

Rambo swept the discus (100-1) and shot put (31-2).

Beaver Local junior Caleb White was first in the 200 dash (23.16), second in the 100 and fifth in the 400. He was the Division II state champion in the 100 and the state runner-up in the 200 last year.

Beaver Local senior James Monte won the 110 hurdles (16.01). He is returning to form after being slowed by injuries since he was sixth at the Division II state meet as a freshman.

Canfield senior Nick Plant, a Virginia Tech commit who is one of the top high school runners in the country, captured the 1600 run (4:30.67). Canfield still won the 3200 relay without Plant in the lineup. Plant is the defending Division I state champion in the 800 and added a 1600 indoors state title earlier this year.

Girard senior Rickey Marsico, the defending Division II state runner-up, won the 800 (2:03.69).

The meet is held in honor of the late F.E. Cope, a longtime Salem athletic director and track official.
